Phil Rowley is a good friend, stillwater fly fishing fanatic, and business partner. Phil and I have co-authored fly tying books and fly tying DVD's and conducted many seminars on the world of fly fishing in lakes. We developed the Stillwater Solutions line of fly tying materials and fish together whenever possible. Phil's website has a wealth of information on stillwater fly fishing, fly patterns, and fly fishing products.
The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC delivers the provincial fish stocking program and is responsible for the marketing and promotion of freshwater sport fishing in the province. This website offers regional fishing guides, current and historic fish stocking records by region, links to purchasing your freshwater fishing license online and much more information on provincial fisheries resources.
Fly BC is a very popular online fly fishing bulletin board. All aspects of fly fishing in BC are covered on this website. It is a great venue for exchanging ideas on fly fishing tactics, fly patterns, information on specific rivers and streams, buy and sell, and discussion groups related to environmental issues affecting our sport.
Easily buy your freshwater license online. This is a website to register and purchase your freshwater fishing license, special license additions, and conservation stamps online. All that is needed is a credit card and a printer for printing the license.

Kluane Wilderness Lodge - Wellesley Lake, Yukon

June 11-18, 2010

Wellesley Lake

An incredible Lake Trout, Northern Pike, and Lake Whitefish fishery ideal for the fly fisher!

Located approximately 200 air miles northwest of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Wellesley is an unbelievably productive water body, considering its far northern latitude. It is relatively small, about 11 miles long by 6 miles wide, and it has clear water. It has a considerable shallow shoal area with marl covered bottoms and lush growth of chara and pondweed. The lake supports abundant populations of chironomids, caddisflies, and mayflies that the lake trout and whitefish heavily feed on during the first month after ice-off, which occurs in early June. This early season fishing employs similar tactics to those used on any productive trout lake in the interior regions of BC. Indicator fishing with chironomids can be extremely effective for lake trout up to the 15 pound range and lake whitefish in excess of 7 pounds. The lake trout are also caught on baitfish patterns, egg sucking leeches, and zonker style flies using 250-450 grain shooting heads and even under strike indicators. In the evenings, the whitefish and smaller lake trout sip adult chironomids, caddis, and mayflies off the surface.

Each season, lake trout are caught in excess of 45 pounds on trolling gear and fish to 30 pounds on fly tackle.

Pike fishing is also spectacular on the fly. These aggressive feeders are in shallow water searching for anything that swims in or on the surface of the lake. They can be readily caught on streamers but the most exciting way to fish for them is with surface poppers. Pike reach in excess of 45 inches and over 20 pounds. There are many shallow, weedy bays, and shoals that provide ideal habitat for these hard pulling fish.

Fishing is done from 14 ft stable Lund aluminum boats, with 15 hp and 4-stroke outboard motors. The boats are equipped with depth sounders and fish-on seats. Fishing is unguided, with 2 anglers fishing per boat, and from just off the lodge dock. The longest boat ride is aproximately 25 minutes to the far end of the lake.

Accommodations include:

  • self-contained cabins with 2 single beds, full bathroom, and a shower
  • family style hearty meals served in the main lodge

Week features include:

  • a couple of group shore lunches of fresh pike or lake trout
  • clinics on casting, fly fishing tactics, and fly tying
  • setup of equipment for each day of fishing

Access to the lodge, from Whitehorse, is via a chartered Otter floatplane.

I am excited about hosting this one week trip at Kluane Wilderness Lodge from June 11-18, 2010. This is my third trip to the Wellesley Lake remarkable fishery. With 24 hours of daylight, you could literally fish all day and all night but the fishing and catching is so good that you will look forward to a relaxing evening or maybe just a bit of dry fly fishing for trophy sized lake whitefish.

The hosted trip price is $4,195CAD for a week of spectacular fly-in fly fishing experience.
