Skip Morris and I released this book in 1999. In 2008, we revised the chironomid section, updating images and adding colour diagrams. This book introduces the novice fly fisher to the world of stillwater (lake) fly fishing and offers more in-depth knowledge for the intermediate level angler. Topics range from reading a lake, seasons of a lake, gearing up with the right rods, reels, and fly lines, fly selection and fly pattern, insect life cycles, hatch charts, fly fishing strategies, boat setup, and courtesy on the water. Extensive use of colour images and diagrams make this book very easy to understand and to learn from.

The writing of this book was a logical step that followed the introduction of the Stillwater Solutions line of fly tying materials developed by Phil Rowley and me in 2005. We feature 30 of our most productive stillwater trout flies and present them in a stand up traditional style recipe book. Each trout food source includes a general description of the life cycle, colouration, sizes, and peak availability. We introduce individual fly patterns with a short background on their development and tips on how to fish them. A large inset photo of the pattern accompanies detailed tying instructions. This book also includes a description of the Stillwater Solutions line of tying materials and the various applications for creating innovative lake and river patterns.
